Using an ancient Captain Midnight secret decoder ring at Warp speed,
John Perz, sent the following message to Nolan Penney:
JP> As for someone winning the popular vote but losing the election,
JP> just off the top of my head, I think the Nixon-Kennedy race was the
JP> last time it happened.
Close, the last time it happened was in 1888 when Benjamin Harrison
was elected over Grover Cleveland. He had 233 electoral votes v. 168
while receiving 5,443,892 votes v. 5,534,488 for Cleveland. Before
that it was 1876 Hayes v. Tilden. Nixon - Kennedy was a very close race
49.72% of the vote for Kennedy and 49.55% of the vote for Nixon.
