I imagine so.. But you can never be sure about it since they know that it 
damages the brain and/or the upper portions of the spine. So for the horse to 
be cognisent about what was going on.. depends on the portion of the brain 
that had suffered damage.
  
The only desease that I know got anywhere near like this where they were sure 
that the horses knew what was going on, was HYPP..  But as bad as the HYPP 
"episodes" got.. it was never EVER near as bad as the EPM "episodes" that 
I've seen.
