Therein lies the problem.  Without being able to clear the cash acct
transactions, they'll be carried forward forever and there's no way
to clear them (other than manually, one at a time).  I tried doing
an export and import, to "clear" the cash transactions in the text
export file or convert it to a "bank" account I could reconcile, but
the transfer transactions were doubled in the checking account when
I did the import.
