Hi, Dave.
DJ> Without doubt, the BEST book of the week! Excellent art by Steve
DJ> Epting, former avengers artist,staring the invaders,Subby, cap &
DJ> the torch, with their origins as well! The storyline ties into a
DJ> story from around issue 5 of the first cap series, circa 1941,with
DJ> a giant dragon sub. It was reprinted in Fantasy Masterpiecs #
DJ> 5,oct 1966"The dragon of doom" It also ties in to issues #3 of
DJ> Capt.Savage from 1968. The ending is quite a shocker,& one just
DJ> HAS to get issue #2 to see how it concludes!! This is a title
DJ> that marvel should have launched 30 years ago! It looks like a
DJ> real sleeper! If a giant asteroid does'nt smack into earth soon,
DJ> this title could easilly make it to 500 issues. At the VERY
DJ> least,It should go 300 issues. It would be a crime if it only goes
DJ> to #50.If your to any degree a marvel fan, support this title!
I don't mean to reduce your enthusiasm for a book... but I think
you might be jumping the gun here. I agree with you that the first
issue was really good... but let's look at the premise of the series.
As I understand it, this series will be set in the pre-silver age-
era... before most of the Marvel heroes we've come to love even
thought of putting on spandex and fighting crime. Sure, the first
story-arc is the Invaders (and it looks to be a fine read too)... but
I hear upcoming stories involve Bloodstone, a character most people
won't even know about (my exposure to him came in the first 2 issues
of "Marvel Presents" and as a back-up feature in "The Rampaging Hulk"
(the Hulk's relatively short-lived magazine from the late '70s... and
a title in which he was killed off, if I remember correctly). My
point is... I'd hardly put Bloodstone on the same level as the
Invaders (that doesn't mean I don't like Bloodstone... I'm just
speculating on how excited most comic fans are going to be about
seeing him in "Marvel Universe"). Personally, I like the premise
behind "Legends Of The DC Universe" a lot better... 'cuz at least in
that case, DC can use characters from all over their continuity (so
long as their not current stories).
The other thing is... Marvel has not had much success with
anthology titles of late... and some of them featured some pretty
well-known characters too. I agree that if the book continued to
feature high-profile characters like the Invaders... it could go
potentially go on indefinitely... but with the limitations on it, I
can't see it lasting till #100... let alone #300 or #500. I guess
we'll have to wait and see.
Personally, I'm planning on picking up issues which feature
characters that interest me. Consequently, a story-arc featuring the
Invaders is something I will buy. Bloodstone? Probably not. Nick
Fury? Perhaps. Wolverine (after all, his healing factor makes him
like 70 years old or something stupid like that... so he could
appear)? Never. Peter Parker's parents as secret agents? I don't
think so. Featuring current Marvel characters before they got their
super-power just doesn't interest me (nor did those "Minus One" issues
Marvel did a while back). Same goes for Marvel doing more Kirby-esque
Monster stories as well.
I guess we'll just have to wait and see how well this book does.
Talk to you later.
David
