PCS is due here in the Boston market in early 97. Already the effects are
being felt. Nynex/BAM introduced a new rate plan with NO Contract and the
first minute of each incoming call is free. The plan is only 15.95 a month
but you need to buy a phone.
Cellular One Boston, SBMS, is taking a different route. Their TDMA 850 mHz
digital network is working thru-out most of their coverage area. They're
calling their digital service PCS or personal cellular service. The rate
plans are the same as their analog system and there is an extra charge for
CID. Their scheme seems to be to get as many people as possible locked in
with their standard one year automatically renewing contracts.
Cell One is charging about 2 bills for their digital phones which is similar
to what the pcs providers are asking.
It will be interesting to see what happens when PCS is here. Will the
contracts be a thing of the past?
Any comments?
