Troops 'ain't coming home soon'
June 24 2003
Three senior US senators from both parties have criticised the Bush
Administration for not communicating clearly the need for US forces
to stay in Iraq for a prolonged time.
"We're involved in nation-building," said Republican Senator Richard
Lugar, the chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee. "It's important
we all understand that - that the President say that, that it's a five-year
plan of stability."
Senator Joseph Biden the committee's ranking Democrat, agreed: "It's
time the president go to the American people and tell them the facts,"
he said. "And the facts are Johnny and Jane ain't coming home any
time soon."
Senator Chuck Hagel, said the public would "need to know the long-term
investment here".
