Is XP involved?. There's been several threads about the loss of signal for
no apparent reason with XP

XP Wi-Fi Mystery Disconnects
MS denies problem is Windows related (This was news posted a while ago,
2004-06-04 18:21:13 to be exact.)
A long-standing issue with Windows XP and Wi-Fi is a seemingly random loss
of wireless signal for no apparent reason, though the signal strength
indicator shows a full signal. Both Wired News and Wi-Fi Networking news
dig http://www.wired.com/news/technology/0,1282,63705,00.html
further into the problem, which Microsoft denies is the fault of Windows
XP. The problem, according to Wi-Fi Networking News editor Glenn Fleishman,
is the general flakiness of the Wireless Zero Configuration tool; which if
stopped, apparently causes the connection to come back. As for the
misleading signal strength indicator, a Microsoft spokesman gives an
interesting runaround, suggesting the indicator indicates your
"association" with an access point, not signal strength.

My solution, provided to me by a vendor about two years ago, of restarting
Wireless Zero Configuration is explained in the article. This has solved 99
percent of my Windows XP Wi-Fi problems, but it's nestled so deeply that
it's baffling. I've felt for a while that Microsoft should have a top-level
interface to WZC because when it stops running, the user has no idea that
anything's afoot until they drill down, down, down, and see that the
setting reads "not running."
