Hi Fellow Bubblers!
I just finished a six month deployment on board the carrier USS Nimitz.
While deployed, I got chances to dive in several overseas ports.
First was Singapore, never dive there! The visibility is a constant 3-10
ft, the huge quantity of local shipping has silted over and choked what
looked to be once beautiful reefs. Sad but true.
Fahjarah United Arab Emirates was Great! This is inside the persian
gulf. The water was warm, vis was good, usually 40-70 ft. Coral life and
fish life were healthy and plentiful, lots of good live reef! Between
dives one day we snorkeled in the shallows surrounding "shark island".
The water was between 3-5 ft deep. What surprised me was the abundance
of Black tip reef sharks in the shallow water, at times we could see 5
or 6 at once. Most of them were 3-5 ft in length, with an occasional
large one. They were timid but would approach within 5 ft. I shot this
on video, when I got home I showed it to my mother who is "afraid of the
water". She always thought I was "touched" (grin).
Our trip was supposed to take us to Australia, but duty called and we
got diverted to Taiwan to keep the elections safe. I regret that, some
day.....
Next was hawaii, typical tropical beauty. We dove the northshore because
the winter months are the only time that allow it, surf is too big in
summer/spring. The temp/vis/fish were all great.
Well it's good to be home (Bremerton Washington) get a chance to get
into my thick wetsuit and go see some coldwater stuff. Great to be back
and great to be online again. See ya on the bottom.
Sean.
