BJ> Are they _working_ for you, Dale?
I have COM/IP running right now. I am still tuning it. I have to make ZModem
transfers more reliable. The nice thing is that the developer/s is/are alive
and working on the product.
I've not worked with Netmodem as I want to FIRST have at least an email
exchange with the author before I plump down a registration fee. The product
does not work unless you register it.
BJ> Zorch Frezberg has not been able to get the combo of Argus/32 mailer and
BJ> Max/32 BBS to work with any of the reputed Vmodem-equivalents.
From what I've read it makes perfect sense he can not make it work. He wants
to have one application handle the TCP/IP and then hand off to another
application that will then need the virtual modem.
BJ> I've also read that Jussi Hamalainen has tried and failed to get COM/IP
to
BJ> work for Win32 apps.
BJ> Maybe the above failures are specific to Win95 and not WinNT?
Couldn't tell you. I don't run nor do I care to run Windows 95 on a system
that I run the BBS on.
BJ> However, I do know that making 16 bit DOS FOSSIL apps telnettable under
BJ> WinNT seems to be somewhat (but not 100%) working with several Vmodem
BJ> clones.
BJ> If native Win32 mailer/BBS apps can be made fully telnettable (in and
BJ> outbound) with zmodem transfer capability intact under WinNT using COM/IP
BJ> or NetModem, it'll be news (welcome news, BTW) to me.
I don't see why this wouldn't work with Binkley and Max. Since Binkley
listens to a com port with a "modem" connected and then hands off to Max the
same com port with the "modem" connected. In theory it should be no different
than what we run on our standard modem lines. COM/IP would be the Modem, it
should work.
If the mailer is the one handling the Telnet connection and not COM/IP, I
don't think it would be able to pass that connection off to Max. Max would
have to be TCP/IP aware and not "modem/com port" aware.
I have no interest in testing that combination out. Why run a mailer on the
TCP connection? The mailer would be used only for Fidonet and last time I
checked, I have to be available via the nodelist. Right now the nodelist
dials by phone number not IP. Why not use FTP to transfer files between
systems instead of a mailer?
As to the transfers via ZModem. They say it works, I've not figured out the
right "modem" settings to make it work 100%. I can transfer small files,
large files die. I had asked because it sounded like you have already tested
COM/IP. Have you? Dale
