Goodyear forced to make final decision

(14-Oct-98) - Year-long doubts over tyre supplier Goodyear's Formula 1
withdrawal will be resolved this week.

Rumours suggest that a new rule is to be passed on Thursday by the sport's
legislative body, the FIA World Council. It would dictate that tyre
manufacturers must give a year's notice of any decision to enter or quit
the sport.

That could force Goodyear's hand. If it does not officially change its mind
this week, it would be too late to stay in for next season.

Goodyear said it would quit F1 1 a year ago, but is said to be still in
talks with Ferrari about 1999.
