-> RJ> I'd like to see the Big Boy, DD40X, Climax, or UP 9000 at the
-> local NHRS
-> RJ>chapter at the Pomona Fairplex back under power. The Pacific
-> Electric #1299,
-> RJ>for which I have Suydam's model, would also be interesting.

-> Who might hold title to this equipment, Rick? If these were turned
-> over to the city of Pomona, lock, stock and barrel, it's up to them
-> to come up with the bucks to start such a project. If U.P. still owns
-> title to these monsters, both steam and diesel, it's doubtful
-> anything will be done, other than seeing them sit on their wheels and
-> deteriorate.
AFAIK, the engines are all the property of the NHRS chapter at the
Fairplex.
The Big Boy is alledgedly in very good condition and would require
relatively little work to restore to operational condition. Of course, I
haven't investigated that in depth, but that was the word from one of the
NHRS people manning the cab during last year's Los Angeles County Fair there.
I was told the DD40X still has the engines but the traction motors have
been removed. The NHRS people are looking for a benefactor to purchase them
for the locomotive.
The Climax needs a lot of work from the looks of it, but I like geared
engines.
I don't know the restoration status of the X9000; I didn't inquire.
Everything east of the San Andreas Fault will eventually fall into the
Atlantic Ocean.
