EH>-> It all reminds me of GOLF. It all seems to be a game of
EH>-> concentration and how much of it you use.
EH>Or how much of it you LOSE!
Deleted!!!
EH>We did hire another guy a little later that was simply amazing. He
EH>came with no recommendation at all. Only had about 300 hours IN
EH>AIRPLANES and flew the dang Aztec like he'd been born in it. Had ALL
EH>the right reactions! Great presence of mind, and like you said
EH>CONCENTRATION!
I remember when I was at that stage of my flying career. I PAID
ATTENTION and wanted it worse than life itself and was able to leap tall
building in a single bound. I got my Instructor and Instrument rating
in about 4 weeks and was instructing AF Cadets in T-6's at 18 years old.
Totally out of my axx and over my head but pulled it off successfully.
Will never forget my dedication and concentration at that time.
EH>Couldn't navigate worth beans, but once we showed him where
EH>everything was, he did great. Like me, they made him fly
EH>umpty-jillion flights in the right seat for peanuts, but by the time
EH>he had his 500 hours IN twins, he was twice the pilot I ever was. I
EH>liked to fly upside down too much! My heart was never really IN
EH>smuggling!
I liked the Acro but felt really comfortable on Instruments.
EH>-> same. He later flew with the Skyblazers (The USAFE Acrobatic
EH>-> Team, painted and looked like the Thunderbirds) that was the team
EH>-> that preformed all over Europe. He was a decorated Combat Pilot
EH>-> in VN so go figure.
EH>Jim, I like to think that it takes a different thought pattern, or
EH>maybe I mean thought process to fly big iron or little. Some can fly
EH>both. Maybe those are the pilots who can concentrate on WHATEVER's at
EH>hand....
I did both and felt comfortable in both. You hit the nail on the head
about concentration on WHATEVER's at hand. I remember DC-10 Co-Pilots
coming back to fly Captain on 727 and always trying to round out high.
It was because they were just mechanical and not much as we call
"hands". I got recurrent in C-172 last year and hadn't flown it in
about 5yrs. It seemed like it was my second flight of the day and not 5
years ago.
EH>As far as I was concerned, the Aztec, or maybe the Queen Air
EH>was just about all the airplane I could say grace over. We had an
EH>Excalibur conversion that I wanted to fly BAD! But, I didn't FEEL
EH>right in big airplanes so I didn't fly them competently and of course
EH>the boss wouldn't LET me fly them. But the little hair trigger
EH>boogers suited my temperament much better. The mistakes might
EH>be serious, but they weren't such BIG mistakes. Like a C-46 out of
EH>control is a LOT of airplane to gather up! A Pitts can get ALL over
EH>the place, and bite itself in the butt so quick it'll make you cry,
EH>but it seems like getting it straightened out happens so much quicker
EH>too! I 'spect Joe Norris knows what I'm talking about and can SAY it
EH>better too!
I really hate to admit it but the larger the A/C is the easier it is to
fly. (I wish I had known that before I started) My wife took one
Flight Lesson then got to fly the 767 Simulator and decided that if she
couldn't fly the 767 she wasn't going to fly anything. (GBG) I flew
the Christian Eagle II last month some and that's a handful also. Not
hard to fly just ask you to "Pay Attention".
Know your equipment, know yourself, don't exceed your capabilities and
always expect the worse and you probably will be around for awhile.
