The initial versions of HIMEM were written for 286 class machines and the 
hardware vendors hadn't standardized on some of the details.  Things got a 
lot simpler as time went by.
Current versions of HIMEM include support for most of the major vendors but 
sometimes you have to specify which kind of computer (the /MACHINE 
parameter).  In the old days hardware vendors had their own versions of HIMEM 
that would only support their systems.
