Modern common rail diesels have about as much in common with their old
mechanical pump ancestors as modern GDI petrol engines have with their old
carburetted ancestors. Modern diesels are almost as good as modern petrol
engines in terms of power and pollution and still handily beat them on
economy. If you doubt me, hold your opinion until you've taken one of the
modern diesel BMWs for a test drive.
