RJT> I ran into that problem with _my_ '77 Ford truck...
RJT> The little metal bit that the shift collar moves busted loose.
I took mine apart after it wouldn't shift and that little metal tab hit
the floor and I knew I was in for it.
RJT> from a dealer showed me that Ford had improved on the design a bit,
RJT> making it thicker in the area of greatest stress. That one is still
The one I bought (used, from a private shop) was considerably made of
thicker metal which promptly made me think of your message here.
LR> I'm going to try to get that little peice welded back on so
RJT> Probably not worth the hassle. Get a new shift collar from a dealer
RJT> and when you replace the column parts there won't be any more stress
RJT> on that.
The last time I went to the dealer for something they told me that Ford
no longer makes it. I was trying to find a light socket for the front
parking lights. I'm probably just going to run a jumper wire though it
like I did on the other side to complete the ground.
RJT> '78, and found that there was no provision for the neutral
RJT> safety switch. Something to look out for, I guess...
LR> I don't know where mine is, I havn't really looked.
RJT> It's easy enough to see if it's on the column.
I found mine. It took a little bit of tweaking to get it to work right with
a different shifter shaft it the original column.
As you may have guessed I have my truck working now. If shifts even better
that before I think that part may have been cracked for quite some time.
I have another question for you. All the roads are "crowned" here (it
rains alot) my truck has a twin i-beam front suspension and when I am on a
"crowned" road I have to turn the steering wheel to the left to make it
steer straight. On a flat road it steers fine. Is this normal of is the
front end wearing out? It's the same truck the '77 Ford F-250 2wd.
Ttyl,
Landon
