Well Tom, I hear you.... I've been in this PC business since Day One; old
habits are hard to break. Also, I run my DOS-based BBS under Win95, and I
still use old classics like Vernon Buerg's LIST...... so 8.3 names are no
stranger to me. (BTW, there's a new LIST with LFN support out now.)
However, there's a lot more to this story than just =your= filenames; what
about the long filenames used by Win95 itself and by many/most programs?

Sorry, I disagree =strongly=. Originally, IBM tried to =control= the PC
industry in the worst possible way; and have made attempts over the years to
regain control. Fortunately, IBM is so incredibly incompetent, that these
feeble attempts failed. Had IBM won, you'd probably be still using a
286-class PC retailing for $5,000 not counting on a mandatory $1,000 annual
service contract.
If you want to know the future of the PC industry, study the past and study
all of the players. You'll realize that if it wasn't for Bill Gates, the
evolution would have taken a dramatically different twist and the average
person would not be able to enjoy the price / performance we are now taking
for granted.
But..... Tom, I'm going to end this right here and now, for two reasons:
a) I don't think =anything= in this world will change your mind
b) This is not the place for in-depth debates, another echo such
as OS-DEBATE or, preferably OSDEBATE, would be more appropriate.
Cheers, Hans
