It's a sitcom about smart folks that has to appeal to the masses.  The
reason Babylon 5 did not get high ratings is the masses are not
interested in grand story lines.  The reason Babylon 5 has a dedicated
fan base to this day is because a minority are interested in grand story
lines.  The Big Band Theory does not attempt to draw fans from a small
base.

That and the writers of Big Bang are folks who couldn't get their own
grand story line show past the execs into production.  They aren't as
convincing as JMS so they are jealous.  ;^)
