I'd say the west coast is pretty nice ( I Dove the whole western half
of PR for about 15 years) - the North - Northwestern side ( where I
live), is is surf-Beat by the Atlantic ocean, but is nice, has some neat
caves & holes , and gets DEEP fast - I can take you to a few places
where we could find 100 + feet right off the beach!
Further south along the coast, the Reef gets dense, and the ocean turns
Caribbean -
Yep! those were the Days ... nothing like slipping off the side of a
Puerto Rican "Yola" into the Atlantic Ocean .. "String of Pearls" comes
to my mind; why they called it that, beats me! Moncho the lobster-Hunter
took me there the first time (He liked to take me with him, because I
went after tropicals only - He shot fish and hooked his lobster, while I
chased my little "fishies" around). This spot is a line of holes about 2
miles off surfers beach in Aguadilla- they sit in the 60 foot shelf that
runs off that beach - the holes drop down to about 80 -90 feet. and are
about 6 - 8 of them, around 15-20 feet across - you could get a lot of
lobster out of there , Big boys too, and, if you made a good enough
bloody mess, you'd get to see what a big HammerHead looked like -Big,
like in 10 feet? No shit! always left me breathless..
He or She, never bit anybody- did manage to steal a few bags with
lobster. Nothing like getting ripped off by a hammerhead!
I guess I do know why they call it string of pearls ... There was
always something in there. My prize was called a Swiss-Guard Basselet...
Damn those things are nice! Always in deep water, always give you a run
for your money.
