linear potentiometers are easily availabe at a parts supply house

yeah AKA semi-logarithmic, (often abbreviated to "log". it's
indicated by the letter A on the case next to the resistance.

yeah  indicated by the letter B on the case

eg 5K0B  5.0 kilo-ohm linear.

I can't think why that would be so, and that's is not reflected in the
pricing i've seen. they have been the same price as log pots wherever I've
looked. (try R2225 vs R2233 at www.altronics.com)
