MM>G'morning Earl,
MM>And thanks for posting up these excellent sky reports. As you may
MM>recall, this paragraph gets me going....
MM> ET> IS THE JULY 31ST FULL MOON REALLY "BLUE"?
Yes, I think you've mentioned this before ...
MM> ET> On Saturday evening, July 31st, a full Moon will rise for the second
MM> ET> time this month (the first time was on July 2nd). Many people call the
MM> ET> second full Moon in a calendar month a "blue Moon"
and use the
MM> ET> expression "once in a blue Moon" to mean something
that occurs only
MM> ET> rarely. While the latter meaning can be traced back centuries, the
MM> ET> former definition is much newer -- and it's wrong....
MM> > http://SkyandTelescope.com/news/article_1310_1.asp
MM>....because the local newspaper's tides, sun and moon tables give
MM>the following times for full moon here in Auckland:
MM>Jul 2nd at 2310hrs NZST (12 hours ahead of GMT)
MM>Aug 1st at 0606hrs NZST
MM>Aug 30th {at} 1424hrs NZST
MM>This creates the interesting situation of a Blue Moon in North
MM>America being a month ahead of Australasia's Blue Moon, because
MM>of antipodean time differences.
I read this somewhere else also. It only works if you use some
particular point - like the prime meridian or somewhere. The blue moon
may or may not occur due to local time differences. Of course the
popular press will not point out this technical point.
