Actually, there were some submariners who wished for Winton's for their
subs. These were subs that were equipped with Hoover-Owens_Rentschler
(H.O.R.)
engines. You can probably guess what they were nicknamed. ;-)
Not much negative was ever written about F-M's or the Winton's. I suppose if
you'd had the HOR's and then got Winton's, you couldn't complain too much.
The HOR's were based on a design by M.A.N., a German company, and had the
blessing
of the Navy, probably why they were such garbage. F-M and Winton both
alized
that putting diesels into fleet boats was a good place to act as a test bed
for
engines for railroad use. Alco did the same thing, but concentrated more on
surface ships.
