Al-Noor
I am helping recruit for the Scuba activity at the 1997 BSA National
Jamboree, so I can provide you with some information on joining the
group.
If you are on the internet, send me your address to
Olan.Watkins@Launch.Net or O.Watkins@Genie.Com and I will send the data
to you. If not post back here the best way to contact you.
I am attching a write description of the jobs by the director of the
activity so that you can see that we expect to have a great time at the
Jamboree.

I have begun some recruiting of my own and am having some luck generating
interest. My prospects have some questions however. Can you provide some
answers?
1. What is the cost for adult leaders? Youth Leaders?
2. What time period will we be expected to be there.
3. List of jobs in the scuba/snorkel area.
4. Why is scuba THE place to work? ( I am in sales and can sell ketchup
sandwiches to Julia Childs. I just need some features and benefits.)
5. How much time off are you projecting?
Okay, here is more info.
Cost: The only cost I have heard so far is $445 for adults. My guess is
youth
staff will be around $225-250.
When to show up: Jambo is from 28 July - 5 August. I will show up on 19
uly
to begin set up (pools should already be set up and filled by the engineers).
Staff members are welcome to start arriving whenever they can. If you have
the
time to spend the earlier you can get there the easier the set up will be.
The
latest you should plan to arrive is Sunday 27 July, preferably Saturday 26
July. July 28 will bring lines of buses as far as the eye can see. On 5
August the place will empty at the blink of an eye. We will spend that day
packing up the scuba equipment for its final destination (don't know what
hat
is yet). Will spend most of 6 Aug getting Jamboree equipment turned in. I'm
the last one out and I plan to leave late afternoon on 6 August. As we all
leave we will already have dreams of Jambo 2000....our goal then.....another
40,000 participants ..... why..... there were 3000 in 89, 17000 in 93, 40,000
in 97, and 40,000 in 2000...that totals 100,000 people introduced to diving
t
Boy Scout National Jamborees by the year 2000! An awesome number.
List of jobs. Off the top of my head.
Quartermaster staff to keep track of the gear and handle repairs.
Pool maintenance staff to keep pools clean.
Pool instructors/divemasters/divers to supervise the diving.
On deck at pools to brief scouts/scouters on the scuba equipment prior to
getting in
 the pool
"Lifeguards" to help divers out of pool and direct traffic on that side of
pools.
Audio visual staff at Discover Scuba video trailers
Admin. staff to check/count participants into the activity.
Staff to supervise the clothes storage tent for participants going into and
out
of the
event. (That will be at least 30 staff at a time right there)
Staff to supervise the exhibit area
Snorkel pool lifeguards
Snorkel pool admin to check in/count participants
Snorkel pool clothes staff
A couple of staff in snorkel pool
PR staff to handle the press
Shower staff to wash off feet prior to participants getting in the pools
Equipment handling staff for refilling tanks
Youth staff supervisors
Entertainment staff to keep the sound system and music going
You will find most staff will rotate through most of these jobs as the Jambo
progresses. There will never be a dull moment!
How much time off? That depends on how many staff we (that includes
everybody)
manage to round up. I want to have a minimum of 2 teams. One day on/one day
off. That would be a luxury for some of the other remote centers (so I'm
told). Three teams would be fantastic.
Why is scuba THE place to work?
1) From a practical standpoint, it is hot around here in August and we have
the
swimming pools. They are the best bargaining chips in the whole place. "You
want to swim in my pool....How may vehicle passes did you say we could
have?....".
2) We are the show place of the Jamboree. Center stage.
3) SCUBA is a neat thing to do in its own right. Watching the excitement of
the participants as most of them try it for the first time is very rewarding.
This is especially true of the paraplegic people.
4) The entire diving world is watching what we do. Our goal is 40,000
participants. There has never been anything this big. Shooting for the goal
adds alot to the excitement factor. 17,081 seemed big last Jambo. If we
don't
get rained out for a day and a half again we can reach the '97 goal. Its a
stretch. The thrill of hitting it will be hard to describe. The past two
Jamborees have been lab scale and prototype. This is the full blown
production.
5) You get to wear your bathing suit all day.
6) We have music to listen to all day as we play.
7) We have pool parties most evenings.
8) We have a big cookout at the end (steaks, etc.).
9) Just watching Jacques run around worrying about keeping the pools clean is
entertainment enough!
10) A diver is a special bred of cat. Adventurous, fun loving, independent,
full of life....this rubs off on the non-divers on the staff. When it's over
we don't have anymore "non-divers". We only have divers and divers who
haven't
gotten certified yet. Many good friendships form at Jamborees and last a
lifetime. We just don't make good friendships, we make DIVE BUDDIES. And
that's as good as it gets!
Let the Adventure Begin.....
