I was wondering if there were any seahorse fanciers in this echo. In
Oklahoma, it is not particularly practical to obtain the necessary
amount of live food for large seahorses, but I once kept one for a
while.
I have ordered 10 dwarf seahorses and have set up an appropriately large
shrimp hatchery to handle the food supply. My shrimp hatch rate is
excellent, and the process is relatively simple and inexpensive. My
hatchery consists of a gallon plastic "sun tea" jar with an air stone and
a salt mix of about 64:8:1 of non-iodized salt, epsom salt, and
baking soda. The spout of the jar is just far enough above the bottom
of the jar to allow easy separation of the baby shrimp from the egg shells
and unhatched eggs after the water is allowed to settle. I refill the
jar a few times with fresh water as needed to make sure I get as many
shrimp as possible captured in my daphnia net as I pour the water through
the net and into the sink.
Are there any small saltwater snails available which would be safe to
keep in a small (5 gallon) nursery tank with dwarf seahorses? I know
sea stars, anemones, and even some corals have been know to injure baby
seahorses, so I thought I'd ask for some recommendations for tank mates
other than brine shrimp.
