BAR colour-scheme hitch

(01-Oct-98) - The British American Racing team has been forced to ditch its
plan to run its two cars in different liveries next year.

From next season, a new rule will forbid F1 teams from running their cars
in different liveries. The rule was voted in at a meeting of the F1
Commission.

However, BAR's request to drop the name of the Tyrrell team, which it
bought last year to guarantee itself an F1 entry, was accepted.

BAR's owner, tobacco giant BAT, is thought to have been planning to run its
cars in the colours of different cigarette brands. The Lucky Strike colours
had been tipped for Jacques Villeneuve's car, while probable team mate
Ricardo Zonta would have had the 555 colours. It is unclear if the rule
will stop teams changing their liveries from race to race.

BAR manager Craig Pollock was less than thrilled at the decision.

"People thought: 'Let's pull this new guy back into line.'" He
said. "If that's the way it is, I'll live with it. But as a
businessman, it's an unbelievable move. It takes away an opportunity for
teams to make money."
