AM>-=> Quoting KEITH SCUDDER to LANDON ROBINSON <=-
AM> LR> Somebody told me about a 305 they were able to spin to 12,000 RPMs
AM> KS> Hahaha!!!, the 305 had a longer stroke than it's bore and couldn't
AM>Not quite that bad... It was oversquare, but had the 350 crank (3.48")
AM>and, I believe, a 3.74" bore.
Thanks for correcting this memory over here, I had to get the book out
and check it, I noticed Chevy was the only one who never made a block
with a stroke longer than a Bore size. I noticed Buick, Pontiac and
others in the GM family made motors that way. I would think that the
way to make an engine rev higher would be to have the bigger bore, just
look at those 301 and 302 V-8's!
AM> KS> pass 6 grand with a stock setup. Even a modified small-block could
AM> KS> maybe get to 9 or ten grand at most.
AM>Landon was probably being told about the high winding 302, that someone
AM>mixed up the numbers on (including the 12,000 RPM). With the 4" bore
AM>and 3" stroke (same as Ford's 302), it raced in early Trans-Am racing
AM>where it saw 7500-8500 RPM. An all out drag race engine might see
AM>10,000 RPM if properly set up with a tunnel ram, titanium valves and
AM>keepers, and some good balancing.
I remember those race-cars well, at one point that was all i heard at
the racetrack (dragstrip) was those small-blocks revving up. Bill
Jenkins used to push 10 grand with his "Mouse motor".
AM>I recall seeing a 55 Chevy back in the late sixties that would wind so
AM>high it would make your eardrums tingle. It was a 327 with the 283
AM>crank which was the 301 made by racers before Chevy made it and called
AM>it a 302. Saw the owner one day leaving a parts store with two fists
AM>full of valves... looked like Chevy valves. ;-)
I remember the 327 had two journal sizes, one small and the other one
was the same size as a 350, I would imagine they used the smaller size
for that motor.
Take Care....
