Hi, Stephen.
DH> pathos and fun... all rolled into one. I know a few old-guard
DH> Legion fans who hate what DC did with them after "Zero Hour"...
DH> and have refused to pick the books up since then. IMO, that's
DH> their loss. As
TH> Well, I consider myself an old Legion fan (since the Mike Grell
TH> days anyway ) and I cannot foresee a time when I would ever
TH> stop buying these books. They are sooo much fun.
ST> Hmmmm. I won't get into this. You know hwo I feel about Mike
ST> Grell....(g)
Those Mike Grell comments weren't mine anyway... but you're
right. There's no point in re-fighting old wars again...
DH> From there, I actually started reading the occasional issue of
DH> "Superboy & The Legion Of Super-heroes" (the first one I remember
DH> was the one where Ultra Boy was framed for murder... somewhere in
DH> the 230s
ST> That one was an EXCELLENT story, drawn by Starlin, featuring
ST> Chameleon Boy as the chief investigator and detective in the case!
ST> A landmark issue of that rag under Levitz, i think.
It was a great story. I've got a question. Is there any reason
you can think of as to why Superboy & The Legion Of Super-heroes #232
is so hard to find. Currently, I'm 2 issues away from having from
S&TLSH #197 all the way to the current issues... but for some reason
none of the stores that I've visited in the Toronto area... nor any of
the vendors at the 3 conventions I've gone to over the past 6 months
have had this issue (my problem with #201 isn't that I can't find
it... it's that I can't find it in decent shape). I'm just wondering
why that particular issue is so hard to find.
ST> Some GREAT Keith giffen stories from before he went cartoonish!
Actually, it was the Giffen era which got me interested in the
Legion on a fairly full-time basis. Even after his art style changed,
there were some really good stories being published... but I still
preferred the way his artwork looked early in his Legion career to his
later (and current) stuff.
DH> Legion/Fatal Five Vs. the Sun-Eater storyline, the original
DH> Computo story (and the one which appeared in the 1st Legion
DH> Annual... which saw Computo possess Invisible Kid II's sister).
DH> Actually, there are really too many to mention here...
ST> Whoops! Got to correct you there! The ORIGINAL "Computo" story was
ST> WAAAAAAY back in Superboy number something or other...in the
ST> SIXTIES, when, as drawn by Curt Swan, I think, the machine, built
ST> by Brainiac 5, devoured one of Triplicate Girl's three dupes. The
ST> Keith Giffen sequel was actually MUCH better, but by no means the
ST> original one....it was the SECOND one.
By now (thanks to other folks), you know I am referring to both
of those classic Computo stories. You're right, the story did feature
one of Triplicate Girl's "selves" being killed by Computo (if I
remember correctly, didn't the 2nd body "buy the farm" in a battle
with the Time Trapper in LSH (Vol. 3) #45?). I own a copy of the
first part... and am still looking for part 2 (although I have read
the story when it was reprinted elsewhere). The Annual, by contrast,
featured a great story of the Legion having to combat their own hi-
tech headquarters (which had been taken over by Computo... who'd taken
up residence in the mind of Invisible Kid II's younger sister).
Talk to you later.
David
