Back "in the day", I used a fine editor called the B editor, or something like
that.  I used it on a modest 386pc over a network to a *nix-based computer to
work on program files that were thousands of lines long. The editor was
designed for programming (columns, line numbering, etc..)  It was very fast,
and never failed.
