Not quite that bad... It was oversquare, but had the 350 crank (3.48")
and, I believe, a 3.74" bore.
KS> pass 6 grand with a stock setup. Even a modified small-block could
KS> maybe get to 9 or ten grand at most.
Landon was probably being told about the high winding 302, that someone
mixed up the numbers on (including the 12,000 RPM). With the 4" bore
and 3" stroke (same as Ford's 302), it raced in early Trans-Am racing
where it saw 7500-8500 RPM. An all out drag race engine might see
10,000 RPM if properly set up with a tunnel ram, titanium valves and
keepers, and some good balancing.
I recall seeing a 55 Chevy back in the late sixties that would wind so
high it would make your eardrums tingle. It was a 327 with the 283
crank which was the 301 made by racers before Chevy made it and called
it a 302. Saw the owner one day leaving a parts store with two fists
full of valves... looked like Chevy valves. ;-)
