-=> Quoting KEITH SCUDDER to LANDON ROBINSON <=-
LR>From when I had the heads off once, you could see the rings from the edge
LR>wear on the pistons but it did great when you floored the gas pedal.
KS> Of course with the head back on, right? :) What type heads did you
KS> have?
Yes the heads were on :) I don't recall it's been about 4 years since I
swapped engines. I do rememeber that they had 1.7" and 1.5" valves though so
they were probably nothing special. The 350 I bought came with '487 heads
on it, I don't know which size of valves it has as it is listed as coming
with either 1.94 or 2.02" intake valves. My guess since they were going to
use it for racing is that is has the large of the two.
LR>My were not pushed out but a couple were leaking (from electrolysis) and
LR>when it froze it pushed out the weak spots and turned a little dribble
into
LR>a water foutain. I believe one of them behind the fly wheel is leaking
too
LR>which means the engine has to come out.
KS> Guess what Landon? Cross your fingers you can save the block with
KS> what it has been through, even though I did a re-build on this 400
I plan on trying to save it even if I have to sleeve every cylendar in it.
But my guess is that I either have a cracked head or a blown out gasket.
Wouldn't happen to know if Chevy blocks have a high likelyhood of cracking
when froze would you?
LR>out would really go. Somebody told me about a 305 they were able to spin
to
LR>12,000 RPMs I don't know if I believe him or not,
KS> Hahaha!!!, the 305 had a longer stroke than it's bore and couldn't
KS> pass 6 grand with a stock setup. Even a modified small-block could
KS> maybe get to 9 or ten grand at most. By where I live, the hairiest
KS> motors were the open-wheeled modified cars at our local 1/4 mile oval
KS> and they were pushing 6-700 HP!
That is more or less what I thought of his story... go tell it to someone
who has been working on a leaking nitrous oxide system to long and maybe
they will believe you.
Speaking of fast cars there was a program on today at 12pm (pacific) on TNN
that featured a '70 Chevelle SS 454 with 450 HP (all stock) that did 0-98mph
in just over 14 seconds.
Ttyl,
Landon
