 ============================================================
 INAUGURAL SESSION - THURSDAY - 17 MARCH 2005 - 19:00-21:00
 ST PAUL'S LUTHERAN CHURCH - 315 WEST 22ND STREET - MANHATTAN
 ------------------------------------------------------------
NYSkies opens its suite of astronomy meetings, The Recent
Astronomy Seminar. These meetings are informal discussions of current
topics in astronomy. These may include space missions, show & tell,
celestial events, travel and conference reports, and news of other
astronomy activities in and around New York City.
Sessions are on the first and third Thursdays of each month from
19:00 to 21:00. The first meeting is on the 17 March 2005. The ones in
April are on the 7th and 21st. After the meetings, Seminar members can
socialize in one of the nearby coffee shops or restaurants.
The NYSkies Astronomy Seminar meets at St Paul's Lutheran Church,
315 West 22nd Street just off 8th Avenue in Chelsea. It is next to
23rd St, IND 8th Av (blue) local train stop. Nearby are the 23rd St
local stations of the IRT 7th Av (red), IND 6th Av (orange), and PATH
(H&M) lines. On milder evenings the church is a short walk from the
34th St and 14th St. express stations and Penn Station. Buses in 14th,
23rd, 34th Sts and 6th, 7th, 8th, 9th Avs pass close to St Paul's
Church.
The formation of The NYSkies Astronomy Seminar came from the
growing desire of NYSkiers and other local astronomers to have a
friendly nonpolitical climate in which to carry on their discussions
of astronomy, to offer a more personal flavor to the Yahoogroups
maillist, and to give NYSkies more visibility as an urban astronomy
group.
The NYSkies Astronomy Seminar is open to the public and is free of
charge, there being no formal 'membership' in NYSkies in the usual
sense. It is funded now by generous donations from many NYSkiers. For
the remainder of 2005 there are no 'dues' for Seminar attendees. The
NYSkies Astronomy Seminar may consider some form of membership status
and dues beginning in 2006.
The Seminar is the newest in the evolution of NYSkies. NYSkies,
fundamentally a maillist in Yahoogroups, in the past hosted booths at
Northeast Astronomy Forum and Earth Day, joined with the NYC Urban
Park Rangers in their astronomy programs, and carried the flag of New
York home astronomy at various conventions and conferences.
If you have an empty Thursday on your astronomy calendar, hop a
train or bus and ride to the stars with The NYSkies Astronomy Seminar.
