FTC checking Internet sites for dubious medical cures...
Hundreds of potentially false or deceptive claims concerning treatments
for diseases such as AIDS and cancer have been discovered on the Internet.
Officials with the Federal Trade Commission and with public health agencies
and consumer protection groups in Canada and Mexico searched health-related
World Wide Web sites this fall. They found more than 400 Web sites and
numerous
Usenet news groups that contain promotions for products and services claiming
to help cure, treat or prevent AIDS, arthritis, cancer, diabetes, heart
disease
and multiple sclerosis.
The FTC sent hundreds of e-mail messages to Web sites and newsgroups,
pointing out that advertisers must have evidence to support their claims.
The agency will re-examine the sites to determine if changes are made.
