JS>KS>70's and a fondness for Chevy's. :) You know the 383 you mentioned was
JS>KS>accomplished by using a 400 SB V-8 with the crankshaft of a 350 using
JS>KS>special bearings. The 400 also needed external balancing..... There's
JS>Uhhh, no, the 400 block, 350 crank deal comes out about 377 or so.
Yes, I just found out from Alan Morrison about it being 377. oh well :(
JS>We
JS>ran that combination in a sprint car for a while and it worked OK. The
JS>383 is a .030-over 350 block with a 400 crank turned down to 350 main
JS>bearing size. You can use standard 400 rods and 350 pistons or 350 rods
JS>and special 350 pistons with the pin hole moved up for the longer 350
JS>rod. You use a 400 harmonic balancer and flex plate or flywheel.
JS>This is a pretty popular deal. I've built a number for customers but
JS>you have to clearance the block for the rods.
I had always wondered about those very thick bearings we were running,
luckily he never used the car for drag racing, just street use. I ended
up only making 3 of that type and all were 377 models, silly me thought
it was a 383. I never knew you could do that with a 350 block and the
400 crank. I should of tried that because I had easy access to several
350 engines nearby me.
