Cisco could be infected, the proxy doesn't allow java applets or executable
downloads. If someone needs something that executes that's what IT is there
for. By blocking executables, they are only exposed to things like the jpg
exploit and AV on the proxy server can handle that.

All attachments are sent to a special email address. Most are handled just
like they were a fax, it's printed and given to whoever it was marked for.
We get tons of email purchase orders, pdf, xls, dwg, txt, doc, you name it.
This way the users don't waste a lot of time trying to figure out how to
open it, that's handled by IT and from there it's output to paper and
handled like a fax. Works quite well.

The rest, the few that are something that can't easily be handled this way,
for example a 100 page pdf instruction booklet, are stored on the server
where the users can easily access them. Some are converted to a more common
file type if needed (for example converting a dwg to a pdf). Since they are
stored on the server, we don't have to backup desktops or archive email via
exchange type setups.

Instead of chasing virus and spyware, updating AV, installing tons of
applications and upgrading to the newest versions so that the users can
open anything they get, IT handles it for the users. It's a different way
than most companies do it but it really does work and saves tons of money
on software licensing.
