AM> LR>Chevy made a lot of small blocks. Hmmm lets see... (correct me if
AM> LR>I'm wrong) the 262, 265, 267, 283, 302, 305, 307, 327, 350, 383
AM> LR>(combination of 350 and 400 parts) and the sb 400
AM> KS> 70's and a fondness for Chevy's. :) You know the 383 you mentioned
AM> KS> was accomplished by using a 400 SB V-8 with the crankshaft of a 350
AM> KS> using special bearings. The 400 also needed external balancing...
AM>At .030" overbore the above would be a 377. A 4.155" bore and a 3.48"
AM>stroke. The 383 is the other combo with the 400 crank in a .030" over
AM>350 block. So it's 4.030" bore with a 3.75" stroke... a stroker 350.
So, it was smaller than 383, thanks for letting me know, I wasn't sure
on the actual size. The person I built the engine for had bought the
parts and I just put it together for him. At first he only had a 350
flywheel and it always vibrated at around 4300 RPM and I told him he
needs the 400 flywheel to get rid of it, he eventually got it.
AM>The 377 was probably used more initially, for performance applications,
AM>since the short stroke would give less piston speed and more high RPM
AM>horsepower. The 383 makes good torque and power for performance street
AM>applications, and may have less problems with bore distortion on the
AM>siamesed 400 block.
We only had some align-boring done on the block and the normal honing
of the cylinders, stock in size.
AM> KS> There's nothing wrong with a healthy L-88 427 V-8 in a 70' Chevelle.
AM>It could sure go there, but the LS6 454 was the factory hot-rod in '70.
AM>The 427 came in '69 and earlier Corvettes and could be ordered by dealers
AM>as a COPO option for the L-88 and ZL-1 Camaros and Corvettes, as I recall.
We had a Speed-shop that used to work with a Chevy dealer and all it
made was these Corvettes, Camaros and Chevy novas with any engine
available in any Chevy. Seeing those 454 V-8 Camaros was something.
The speed shop's car ran high 12's while everybody else in it's class
were in the 13's. It was sold as a brand-new car from Chevy, just
alittle changed with the normal warranty also!
AM> KS> What was real nice right from a Dealer was the SS 454 V-8 Chevelle in
AM> KS> 71'. It was just about the same engine as the 460 HP engine offered
n
AM> KS> the Vette of the same year and same engine size.
AM>It lost some compression and a fair amount of power after 1970, not that
AM>you couldn't put it back though! Ford and Chrysler snuck a few high
AM>compression models out in some early '71 models anyway. I think they
AM>were required to lower the compression for low-lead gas in January of
AM>1971, but I'm not sure of the exact reason.
What was the main reason the 70's cars lost so much HP in their ratings?
Was it because the engine was tested different?

I would love to have one, that or the ZL-X...
