It was hardly free and it soon had things like the 10 connection limit to
distinguish between desktop and server..

What it did have was protection from those who wanted to make it everything
to everyone, they had windows 9x to hose so they left NT alone and if left
alone all the NT team had to do was listen to users instead of marketing.

It wasn't till Microsoft put the focus on NT and discontinued 9x that
everything changed, now instead of listening to users the team had to
listen to marketing.
