Back in the 70's and 80's IBM had a similar strategy with hardware, the
problem was the users saw thru it and recognized it as a lock in strategy.

Same is happening with Microsoft today, they say "connected
entertainment" and I read that as "incompatible with everything
else".

But besides that, Microsoft needs to lighten up and recognize that in an
internet world of no forced anything, (video on demand caters to the users
being in control instead of being forced to watch the NBC network schedule)
you can't promote forced marketing either.

Google has a grip on this, their search feature which doesn't get in your
face yet does provide you the ability to follow paid advertising links
really is the future, it gives the users control. The idea of not getting
in your face but instead providing exactly the type of paid links that the
user would want is the only way that is going to work.

Microsoft is still in the twilight zone, "we control the horizontal,
we control the vertical, we control .. hey where did everyone
go?"
