You are quite correct. Many officers run the tag because something doesn't
look right. Maybe there is only one screw holding the plate on, possibly
indicating a stolen tag trying to conceal a stolen vehicle. There are many
good reasons to run tags. That gut feeling that many good officers get
sometimes yields wanted criminals with that simple tag check. It really boils
down to the use of a tool for doing police work. Take care.
