Compromise reached on 'exotic' metals

(13-Oct-98) - The row between Ferrari and McLaren over the use of a
controversial exotic material has been resolved.

A highly expensive metal alloy known as aluminium beryllium has been banned
for most applications, although its use will be allowed in specific engine
parts. McLaren's engine supplier, Mercedes, is believed to use it to reduce
friction in cylinder linings.

Formula 1's rules think-tank, the Technical Working Group, is expected to
come up with a list of allowable beryllium engine parts at its meeting
later this month.

Ferrari was trying to get the material banned claiming that it had safety
concerns regarding the substance. In microscopic particle form, beryllium
can be toxic and trigger a lung disease similar to asbestosis.

F1's rulers were keen to prevent the widespread application of beryllium.
There were fears that its use could have spread to all areas of car
construction including engine blocks, gearbox casings and suspension
uprights.

Aluminium beryllium had already been banned in brake callipers.
