The last I heard, BBC drama showrunners are expected to leave a little
more up to the freelancers. (After all, look at how much Moffat
himself achieved under Davies.)
And I can see feeling an aesthetic need for there to be five castes
rather than four, and deciding to make the last one temporarily an
enigma, rather than locking it into something dull.
