It's my remark, let me explain. I'm running this version of Msged in DV
Window 4. Window 1 and 2 have the bbs running in them, window 3 is running
a looping batch file that checks to be sure everything is as it should be
(most of the time the batch file is "sleeping" waiting for
something to trigger it). The machine is a 486/66 with 16 megs of ram.
With this version of Msged running I'm able to open a total of 11 DV
windows. Here's what mem run in window 5 looks like;
_ _ _ O / _ _ C_U_T_ H_E_R_E_ _ _ _
O \
C:\DV>mem
Memory Type Total = Used + Free
---------------- ------- ------- -------
Conventional 639K 105K 534K
Upper 0K 0K 0K
Reserved 0K 0K 0K
Extended (XMS) 15,360K 14,368K 992K
---------------- ------- ------- -------
Total memory 15,999K 14,473K 1,526K
Total under 1 MB 639K 105K 534K
Total Expanded (EMS) 992K (1,015,808 bytes)
Free Expanded (EMS) 992K (1,015,808 bytes)
Largest executable program size 534K (546,528 bytes)
Largest free upper memory block 0K (0 bytes)
The high memory area is not available.
_ _ _ O / _ _ C_U_T_ H_E_R_E_ _ _ _
O \
Configuring and starting Msged 4.00 is a whole lot different. As Msged
4.00 runs in Window 4 I am unable to open _any_ additional windows until
Msged 4.00 is swapped to disk. :-( Here's what a mem command produces in
Window 5 (window 4 is swapped to disk);
_ _ _ O / _ _ C_U_T_ H_E_R_E_ _ _ _
O \
C:\DV>mem
Memory Type Total = Used + Free
---------------- ------- ------- -------
Conventional 607K 105K 502K
Upper 0K 0K 0K
Reserved 0K 0K 0K
Extended (XMS) 15,360K 15,360K 0K
---------------- ------- ------- -------
Total memory 15,967K 15,465K 502K

Total Expanded (EMS) 992K (1,015,808 bytes)
Free Expanded (EMS) 0K (0 bytes)

The windows are configured in DV to use 1 meg of EMS memory. Msged 4.00
swapping to disk to open window 5 tells me there is NO memory left at all.
If there were, Msged 4.00 would use it to swap and additional windows could
be opened. The only other program I've ever see do this was a file manager
called Wizard. In Wizard you can limit the amount of memory used with an
enviorment variable. Here's a bit from Wizard's docs;
_ _ _ O / _ _ C_U_T_ H_E_R_E_ _ _ _
O \
File Wizard is designed to use DMPI (DOS-Protected-Mode-Interface). Due
to that fact, Wizard is able to use the whole RAM and the all above
memory, which is available as XMS. To run this mode you need a PC with
a 286/386 processor and 1,2 MB free XMS memory. A special version for
a XT or a pc with only 1 MB RAM isn't available.
Following environment settings change the memory management
for the built in DPMI server. Wrong settings may lead to
an irregular behaviour of File Wizard !
The settings are passed via the DOS environment varibale RTM.
SET RTM=[option value] [option value] ...
possible options:
EXTLEAVE nnnn Let nnnn Kbyte extended memory left
EXTMAX nnnn Only use a maximum of nnnn kByte of extended memory
_ _ _ O / _ _ C_U_T_ H_E_R_E_ _ _ _
O \
If you need more info, holler, I'll be glad to help. The version I'm
using has a few little quirks that I'd like to eliminate but it's still
better than the 2.2e version I was running.
