Even if I didn't know that from other sources, I know it as an
Episcopalian. Thomas Cranmer was, perhaps, the greatest master of
English prose who ever lived, but the poor dear thought that emending
"Lord have mercy" to "Lord have mercy upon us" would
make it suitable
for the same music as "Kyrie eleison", just because both have seven
syllables. His poetry is museum-quality Tudor Drab; fortunately, he
knew it, and wrote as little as he could get away with.
But Thomas Cranmer wrote the Book of Common Prayer, not "Babylon 5".
