It's a sitcom depicting scientists as idiot savants who have made it to
their 30s but still can't talk to girls.  The one of their friends who
does have a girlfriend is the one with the lowest opinion of his own
scientific prowess.

Why should they prefer Babylon 5 over the Green Lantern, Shakespeare
over a Keith Laumer bolo novel, prime rib with a little horseradish
over a hot dog with ketchup?  One point of the sitcom is to display
their poor taste in everything.

I get that sitcoms in general insult every group they touch.  It's
considered a part of their humor.  I find these comic book scientists
hilarious in that I knew too many undergrads too like them and was one
myself and sad that thinking someone still stuck in that phase a decade
later is funny.  Anyone who has met actual scientists doing actual
science knows that Newton-with-Asberger is not common among scientists.
I also find the movie "Real Genius" both hilarious and sad for the same
reasons.
