-=> Quoting Steven Horn to Bj”rn Forsstr”m <=- BF> I found Yellowknife on the map and it wasn't that much north than BF> Whitehorse. Hi Bjorn, I live in Yellowknife. SH> About 130 miles, far enough to give it longer Summer days. On June 21st we get 20 hours of true sunlight and 4 hours of twilight but it doesn't get dark. Even now, the sky is only dark blue, not black at midnight. There is still enough light on the horizon after sunset that the stars don't shine. I won't see them again until late August. SH> Yellowknife has a Midnight Sun golf tournament. It's scheduled for June 21st and there are teeoffs for 24 hours straight. the golf course is on the shore of a small lake and is all sand, no greens, which is a challenge. BF> Funny though how a foreigner sees other countries place-names but BF> not their own. You don't react but I do. We don't have a name such BF> as Yellowknife but if you translate BF> one of our Island called Hissingen to English it will be BF> Elevator-nobody. Yellowknife was named after the copper knives the first European here saw the Natives using. The Native Dene (Indian) name for the place is Sombe Ke which means money place or trading place in their language. There was no permanent village here but several tribes shared the summer fishing grounds here on a seasonal basis (and traded with each other.) There was only a permanent settlement here after 1934 when gold was discovered. Because of the mines, Yellowknife is over half white, not Native but the other small villages in the region are predominantly Dene. Cheers, YK Jim ...
