So it's not a musical as in "Cabaret" or "Evita" > or "Carousel" or "Fiddler on the Roof," which is what most people older than > twenty-ish think of first when they hear "musical." It's a curious fact that, from the very dawn of talkies, Hollywood has made musicals of its own, but has invariably confused stage musicals with revues. Even "High School Musical" does this -- it is a musical in its own right (one may think it a singularly uninspired example, but that is not the same thing as not being a musical at all), while the musical-within-a-musical isn't. (I've also long wondered what comes in the second act of "The Land Around Us", the musical in the Hollywood version of "The Country Girl". It clearly /is/ supposed to be a real musical -- I suppose it's an exception to the general rule because "The Country Girl" is not itself a musical -- but the "first-act finale" shows every sign of being the ending. The original Odets text doesn't help -- the inner show in that is a legitimate play.) --- SBBSecho 2.12-Win32* Origin: Time Warp of the Future BBS - Home of League 10 (1:14/400) SEEN-BY: 3/0 633/267 640/954 712/0 313 848 @PATH: 14/400 261/38 712/848 633/267 |
