Hi All,
I have finally gotten a copy of JAR and tested it out myself. I have
been browsing through the JAR testing thread in this echo and have
noticed that a lot of you have used many switches, etc. to compress
various different files.
For simplicity's sake, I decided to do a test myself on JAR with VERY
common settings. I extracted the contents of the file JAR101CX.EXE
(which can be downloaded from ftp://ftp.std.com/pub/jar/) into directory
c:\test and using JAR32.EXE, I compressed the contents of the
JAR101CX.EXE archive into a single file using the following command:
jar32 a c:\jartest c:\test
Then, I used ARJ v2.5 to do the same:
arj a c:\arjtest c:\test
The time difference was, as expected, insignificant, but the time taken
to compress using JAR32 was marginally less than that taken with ARJ.
The respective file sizes were:
ARJTEST.ARJ 480,382 bytes
JARTEST.J 446,744 bytes
I find that this is a good indication of the potential of JAR, as I have
to admit some of the time, for convenience and simplicity's sake I only
use the simplest commands to archive files. Any comments, criticisms,
talk to my lawyer. Any fanmail, presents, money, checques, send to me.
:)
Cheers, CF Pang
