JW> Hi Bjorn,

Hi.

 JW> I live in Yellowknife.

Must be nice.

JW> On June 21st we get 20 hours of true sunlight and 4 hours of twilight but
JW> it doesn't get dark. Even now, the sky is only dark blue, not black at
JW> midnight. There is still enough light on the horizon after sunset that the
JW> stars don't shine. I won't see them again until late August.

You can't bee an astronomer then.

SH>> Yellowknife has a Midnight Sun golf tournament.

JW> It's scheduled for June 21st and there are teeoffs for 24 hours straight.
JW> the golf course is on the shore of a small lake and is all sand, no
JW> greens, which is a challenge.

Must be. All other corses have at least some grass.

JW> Yellowknife was named after the copper knives the first European here saw
JW> the Natives using. The Native Dene (Indian) name for the place is Sombe Ke
JW> which means money place or trading place in their language. There was no
JW> permanent village here but several tribes shared the summer fishing
JW> grounds here on a seasonal basis (and traded with each other.) There was
JW> only a permanent settlement here after 1934 when gold was discovered.
JW> Because of the mines, Yellowknife is over half white, not Native but the
JW> other small villages in the region are predominantly Dene.

Sounds nice.
What do you do for a living there today? Are the gold mines still in use?

JW> ... Yellowknife - mosquito supplier to the free world.

We have a lot of them here as well.
