Actually the NY Times is dying for the same reasons that most other print
newspapers (and magazines) are dying:  lack of readers and lack of advertisers.
Newspaper readership has been falling for decades, the Internet has accelerated
the process.  The TImes and other newspapers were slow to figure out a way to
make money from Internet operations.  Not to mention incessant attacks from the
various right wing hatemongers.
