General News
----------
During March 2006 we had the cancellation of a prominent event and
the announcement of a new prominent event. The Godel-Einstein talk at
SIBL on March 16th was called off several days in advance. The new
lecture, a major discussion of Greek astronomy, was held at St
Joseph's College on March 27th.
Both incidents were duly noted with ample leadtime in the NYSkies
forum. While some readers get only the printed NYC Events, a handout
at an astronomy meeting, this column should be used in conjunction
with the forum. That's why at the very top of NYC Events, I call
attention to the NYSkies forum.
Three upstate astroclubs may have a continuing glitch. Catskills
Astro Club's website is still out of service and Orange County
Astronomers still has last year's calendar of events on its website.
They are now joined by Rockland Astronomy Club. Rockland's website
does have addiurnate information about the Northeast Astronomy Forum
in May 2006, but still has a 2005 calendar for its Anthony Wayne and
other special events. Like, it shows the April 2005 NEAF! NYC Events,
March 2006, misread this calendar for an Anthony Wayne session and the
mistaken date was a valid 2006 date.
With the coming of mild weather in April, please keep aware of
winter's lingering chill and breeze. Many cultural tours in April
require outdoor exposure. What may be fun to walk thru for shopping,
visiting, commuting could be devastating on an extended outdoor tour.
Astronomical Society of Toms River Area meets in the Fine Arts hal
of Ocean County College for its Feb thru May 2006 meetings., not in
the college's Novis Planetarium.
Yale University enters the NYC Events family with its astronomy
lectures. They are open for local astronomers. Its spring season
completes in April, but it wants NYC Events to promote these talks
again in the fall.
The NYSkies territory switches to Eastern Daylight Time on Sunday
2 April 2006. Set your clock AHEAD, FORWARD, one hour. Officially, the
shift is made at 02:00 EST, which becomes 03:00 EDST. There are no
valid times from 02:00 thru 02:59 on Sunday the 2nd.
Event news
--------
The NYSkies Astronomy Seminar continued its lively discussions of
astronomy news, with a lively and stable attendance. On March 2nd our
members arrived on the heels of an allday snowstorm! On the 16th we
had a full house of twelve folk, including the hall's custodian! He
heard something about 'ice on Saturn found by a German spaceship'. As
we explained about Cassini, he sat down to take in a slice of the
Seminar!!
NYSkies Astronomy Seminar completed is first year; the kickoff
session was on 2005 March 17. We'll have a little party, with clicking
wine glasses, at our April 6th session. Come on down and mingle with
the City's home astronomers!!
The mega events, yes, events in the plural, are the TWO festivals
for Earth Day. Traditionally, America celebrated Earth Day with a
giant street fair or indoor exhibition in New York. NYSkies is n
annual exhibitor at these fun-filled events.
