 DA> Have you read any of the Diane Duane books?  Thoughts?
For my money (what little there seems to be...) I think hers are some of the 
best ST novels out there.
From the very first she has shown a real respect for the characters she 
writes about.  Reading her TOs novels you can't help but hear the voices of 
shatner, Nimoy (and the rest) in her writing of Kirk, Spock (and the rest).
She came up with really interesting backgrounds of both the Vulcans and the 
Romulans (who are more alike than either would really like to admit, I 
think), and it's too bad none of it will ever probably be used in canonical 
ST.
You might also want to look at "Rules of Engagement" by Peter Morwood.  He's 
Diane Duane's husband.  His writing is a lot like hers, but with some 
interesting differences.
Also take a look for Duane's non-ST writing.  Especially her fantasy series 
beginning with "The Door Into fire".
