PCs with proprietary parts always bugged me. In early high school, I had a friend who had a Packard Bell computer (a popular model at the time), and the most obvious thing was its proprietary case. It had a horizontal case, and one time we were looking inside it, and I saw it had a riser board for the expansion cards to be installed horizontally rather than vertically, and if I remember right, it also had an expansion card that was a modem and sound card in one. I thought it was pretty weird.
